Hail Satan? Is it the chant of the devil or a cry of defiance against evangelical Christianity? Penny Lane sets out to uncover what's truly happening behind the Satanic Church in a documentary spanning three years, examining the actions, deeds, and perception of the Satanic Church.
The story begins in Florida in 2013, as Governor Rick Scott aims to pass a bill legalizing student-led prayer in schools within the state. However, according to the First Amendment, any religion, at least in theory, is entitled to this ruling.
An unprecedented coalition emerges, comprising untheistic, agnostic, Christians, and Temple of Satan representatives. They collectively adopt the chant of "Represent ALL faiths, or none at all" in their plea to the government. From here, the Satanic Church has only grown in popularity as their organization expanded, performing deeds of charity and community service.
Led by self-anointed Lucien Greaves, the Satanic church, despite its reputation, preaches a message of love, acceptance, self-worth, and community. All of this is done, in part, to provide a counter-movement against the increasingly conservative evangelical Christianity.
The Satanic Temple is often regarded as a joke by many, including some of its own followers. However, there is no denying the strangely reasonable and well-thought-out messages that the temple preaches. Whether you're religious, spiritual, or agnostic, the Satanic Temple seems to present a more accepting version of what the Christian faith claims to be.
This documentary is insightful and strangely moving, providing a thought-provoking exposé of the Satanic Church.
